For a kitten
What should I do in the first 24 hours with a new kitten?
The first day is about safety and decompression, not playtime and a full-house tour. A whole home is overwhelming to a small kitten.
Book a standard vet checkup sometime in the first week. Call sooner if something looks wrong.
Day one checklist
- One quiet room. Close the door. Spread food, water, and a low-sided litter box so food is not next to the box.
- Feed exactly what they ate at the shelter or breeder. No new treats or diets today.
- Leave the carrier open in the room as a hiding spot.
- Let them hide. Do not drag them out. Sit quietly and let them come to you.
- Skip baths, new diets, and introductions to other pets or children on day one.
Look closer if
- They refuse to eat.
- They do not pee.
- They feel cold to the touch.
- They breathe with visible effort.
Ask a vet if one of these shows up. This is not a diagnosis.
Add your kitten for age-specific guidance
The answer stays free. Borzi can hold a prep checklist and log first meals and litter visits with your kitten. It does not decide day one went well.
