For a kitten
How many times a day should a kitten eat?
Under 4 months, offer 3 to 4 small meals a day. Use the daily amount on the kitten food, then split it across those meals.
How many times a day should a kitten eat depends on age. A young kitten has a small stomach and burns energy fast.
Start with the food they came home on. A sudden switch is a common reason for loose stool. Read the daily feeding guide on that package for the current age and weight, then divide it by the number of meals.
Wet and dry foods are not the same by the gram. Do not copy another kitten's bowl.
Meal times
- Under 4 months: 3 to 4 small meals a day.
- 4 to 6 months: 3 meals a day.
- 6 to 12 months: 2 meals a day.
Look closer if
- They skip meals.
- They seem weak.
- They vomit repeatedly.
- They are not gaining weight.
Ask a vet if one of these shows up. This is not a diagnosis.

How much should my kitten eat?
Food
No. Do not give a kitten cow's milk. Offer water, and feed a food labeled for kittens.
Can kittens drink milk?
Food
Sudden food changes often upset the stomach. Switch slowly over 7 to 10 days. One soft stool during a careful switch can settle on its own.
